Episode 63: “Family Epidemic” Is The Wrong Word

Everyone keeps calling it an epidemic: adult kids who stop speaking to parents, siblings who stop talking, family members who skip the holidays. Amy doesn’t see a family falling apart. She sees people finally asking what family is supposed to mean to them.

In part one of this six part series, Amy breaks down the invisible rules most families run on, why criticism usually comes from fear instead of anger, and why explaining yourself more rarely gets you understood.

The rules nobody wrote down

Every family runs on rules nobody said out loud. We don’t upset that person. We don’t bring up what happened last year. That person never apologizes, so you learn to move on without one. Amy has heard these rules in her own family and in the families around her, and she has watched the resentment they create build for years before anyone names it.

Why criticism usually isn’t cruelty

When a parent criticizes a choice, Amy doesn’t think most of them are trying to hurt you. She thinks most of them are scared: scared of watching you get hurt, scared of the unfamiliar, scared of what it means about them if you choose differently. That doesn’t make the criticism fair. It does mean the fight underneath it is rarely about you specifically.

Why criticism usually isn’t cruelty

Amy spent years explaining her choices to extended family, hoping one more explanation would finally land. What she found: the more she explained, the less she received. Explaining had turned into asking for permission she didn’t need.

Use this today

Pick one relationship where you’ve been over-explaining a choice you already made. Practice saying the short version out loud: “I hear that you disagree. I’m still doing it.” Notice what happens when you stop defending the decision and just state it.

This episode is part one of six. Amy will spend the rest of the series on boundaries, belonging, accountability, and what it looks like to build the family you actually want.
